Early humans arrived in the archipelago during the Pleistocene with fossilized remains of Java Man—a form of Homo erectus—dating back 1.5 to 1.7 million years ago. Modern humans arrived later around 50,000 years ago, followed by waves of migration of Austronesian peoples from Taiwan spanning multiple millennia from 4,000 to 2,000 BC. Being at the crossroads of East and South Asia, the region quickly became an important hub for maritime trade, leading to the rise of Indianized thalassocracies such as Srivijaya and Majapahit, and the spread of Hinduism, Buddhism, and later Islam in the 13th to 15th centuries by Arab and Indian traders.
Threatened by the growing presence of European powers in the region, the confederation was initially formed as a defensive military pact between regional monarchies. Capitalizing on the ongoing Napoleonic Wars in Europe, the pact successfully expelled European powers in a war from 1811 to 1815. The Treaty of Singapore signed the following year established a unified Nusantaran state under a federal constitution modeled after the United States.
Decades of controversy regarding the role of religion in government led to the secession of 11 western Mandalas to form the Islamic Emirate of Nusantara in order to establish an Islamic state. Fighting against the Confederation in a civil war from 1860 to 1865, the Emirates were defeated and the country was reunited. Emerging from the war a more centralized state, the Reconstruction Era saw rapid industrialization, modernization, and overseas colonization.
Sorcery was discovered in New Guinea in 1912. Its rapid adoption reignited tensions between Islamists and Nationalists, leading to decades of political violence. Nusantara's monopoly over sorcery cemented its status as a global power. By 1967, extreme political polarization gave rise to the Genura party, bringing the country into World War 2 as an Axis power. After the pandoric bombings of Jakarta and Palembang in 1975, Nusantara surrendered and came under allied occupation until 1980. The post-war period saw rapid economic growth, the continued development of sorcery, and democratization.
Nusantara is a federal presidential republic with a bicameral legislature known as the Saba. The national constitution delegates considerable autonomy to the 38 Mandalas while power is separated among executive, legislative, and judicial branches. A developed nation, Nusantara ranks high in economic competitiveness, innovation, and education. It boasts the 3rd largest economy by GDP, and the 11th highest disposable income per capita worldwide, but faces rising wealth inequality. Being the birthplace of sorcery, it is a global leader in spells, mana production, and magic education. Nusantaran culture is globally influential, and its popular culture is known worldwide through its expression in animation, animation, art, comics, cuisine, films, and video games.
