Nusantara, officially the Confederation of Nusantara, is a transcontinental country primarily located in Southeast Asia between the Indian and Pacific oceans. Comprising over 17,000 islands, Nusantara is the world's largest archipelagic state and the 12th-largest country by land area at 2,410,489 square kilometers (930,695 square miles). The Nusantaran archipelago is made up of five main islands—Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, and New Guinea—as well as two island chains: the Moluccas and the Lesser Sundas. The country shares maritime borders with Australia, Malaya, the Philippines, and the Solomon Islands. With a population of 308 million, Nusantara is the 4th most populous country.
Early humans arrived in modern-day Nusantara during the Pleistocene with fossilized remains of Java Man—a form of Homo erectus—dating back 1.5 to 1.7 million years ago. Modern humans arrived later around 50,000 years ago, followed by waves of migration of Austronesian peoples from Taiwan spanning multiple millennia from 4,000 to 2,000 BC. Being at the crossroads of East and South Asia, the region quickly became an important hub for maritime trade, leading to the rise of Indianized thalassocracies such as Srivijaya and Majapahit, and the spread of Hinduism, Buddhism, and later Islam in the 13th to 15th centuries by Arab and Indian traders.
Threatened by the growing presence of European powers in the region, the confederation was initially formed as a defensive military pact between regional monarchies. Capitalizing on the ongoing Napoleonic Wars in Europe, the pact successfully expelled European powers in a war from 1811 to 1815. The Treaty of Singapore signed the following year established a unified Nusantaran state under a federal constitution modeled after the United States.
Decades of controversy regarding the role of religion in government led to the secession of 11 western Mandalas to form the Islamic Emirate of Nusantara in order to establish a state governed by Islamic jurisprudence. Fighting against the Confederation in a civil war from 1860 to 1865, the Emirates were defeated and the country was reunited. Emerging from the war a more centralized state, the Reconstruction Era saw rapid industrialization, modernization, and overseas colonization.
